While there have been a few studies done on vaping and the effects of second hand vapor, the technology is fairly new and it will be awhile before we see long term results from vaping.
That said, the information below should help you decide for yourself. We look at it this way;. A cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, many of which are KNOWN carcinogens. E-Liquid contains just 4 base ingredients that produce a handful of chemicals and those are typically only found at trace levels. Enough to be detected but not enough to measure.

So what is an e-cig, how does it work and is it safe?
While the format of the electronic cigarette is relatively new, the concept of Vaporizing or "Vaping" has been around for some 15 years or so. It's been wildly popular in Europe for the last 10 years and is largely advertised as an alternative to smoking regular cigarettes or "Analog's", as they are called by those in the know. Analog's contain 4000+ chemical carcinogen's known to be toxic to the human body, many of which are known to cause cancer. E-Liquid contains just 3 base ingredients (plus optional nicotine) all of which have been recognized as safe for human consumption by the FDA. The electronic cigarette is a very simple device. Essentially when the switch is engaged, a battery delivers electricity to a heating element which comes in contact with the E-Liquid. The liquid heats up and creates a very fine vapor that is inhaled. This experience is VERY much like smoking an analog cigarette. In the market today, there are countless products with different methods of delivering power and liquid to the heating element but, no matter what the product, it really is just that simple.
There are three very different types of devices on the market today. While each function essentially as outlined above, what sets them apart is the power and delivery methods available. All three work to provide varying degrees of vapor output and battery life which translates into a more realistic "analog" type of experience for the user. The E-Cig or Cig-alike
This is the first device most people purchase as it is the most recognizable and can be found at smoke shops and many convenience stores. It looks and feels somewhat like a real cigarette and is largely targeted at those who are new to the technology and timid about quitting. This device consist of a rechargeable battery to which you connect a disposable cartridge filled with E-liquid. Most cigalikes do work as advertised but, our testing of currently available devices has concluded that most do not deliver the power or battery life necessary to provide a positive long term vaping experience.
The eGo style e-cig
The ego is wildly popular due to it's size, styling, acceptable performance and price. Unlike the e-cig, many models of the eGo can accept a wide range of accessories allowing the user to personalize their experience. The eGo has become a favorite of those who are looking to quit smoking but are still style conscientious and mindful of their budget. The eGo is the most popular device on the market today. Stylish and affordable and with acceptable performance but it lacks the extended battery life of an APV MOD. In all, the eGo is a great entry level device.
The APV MOD
The APV MOD or Advanced Personal Vaporizer MOD has been around since the beginning. The MOD stands for "Battery Modification". In the early days of vaping, DIY types figured out that if they modified the battery voltage, it would deliver more power to the coil (heating element). In turn, they got more vapor and thus, a more satisfying experience (more like an analog). They also figured out that when a larger battery is used, they got a longer vaping time (all day long). So, they began "modifying" existing technology with bigger batteries and faster liquid delivery systems that create plumes of vapor.
Over the years this has evolved the market into what it is today. MODs today are capable of delivering enormous power to the coil, extended amounts of usage and current tank and wicking technology ensure every bit of that power is used to turn your juice into vapor. Most mods are capable of delivering a "Premium" vaping experience that surpasses all other devices on the market. Many are capable of creating more vapor than the smoke that can be produced by a regular analog cigarette.
What is E-Liquid?
The vapor produced in an electronic cigarette uses a nicotine base liquid which is known as E-Liquid. This liquid is heated by the atomizer/cartomizer (heating element) to deliver the sensation, taste, and feel of smoking. You can have the best MOD in the world, but your vaping experience will not be enjoyable without a quality e-liquid. E-liquid can vary in flavor, consistency, throat hit, and nicotine concentration.
What gives E-Liquid it’s flavor?
Natural and artificial flavorings from flavor concentrates are usually added to the liquid to give its distinctive flavors. These flavors are usually the same flavoring used to flavor food and candies.
What goes into E-Liquid?
E-Liquid is made from just a few primary ingredients. Pharmaceutical grade vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are the primary ingredients both of which are considered safe for human consumption by the FDA. Many manufacturers use a combination of the 2 to achieve specific thickness and/or throat hit or to fine tune the e-liquid to different types of atomizers. Flavorings and/or nicotine are then added if desired.
Throat hit is the sensation felt in the back of the throat when the vapor is inhaled. In the early days of vaping, people felt vaping an e-cigarette was like inhaling air instead of the smoking sensation they enjoyed, when compared to real cigarettes. Increased throat hit makes using an e-cigarette feel and taste more like real smoking.
The liquid base, concentration of nicotine, and voltage of the e-cig affects the liquid’s throat hit.
E-liquid is diluted with pure PG or VG to a safe concentration of 0mg – 36mg per milliliter of liquid. A typical full flavored analog cigarette contains about 18mg of nicotine. The nicotine concentration desired varies among people, but a normal typical range for most smokers is around 18mg. As the concentration of nicotine increases, the throat hit is substantially increased. 0mg e-liquid usually feel more like inhaling warm flavored air, whereas 36mg may be more suitable for experienced or extreme vapers (users). Every nicotine concentration is unique for each person based on their tolerance level, years they have been smoking, and what type of tobacco they have smoked.
Typically, it is recommend that new vapers begin with 18mg to determine their tolerance for a few weeks, then slowly decrease or increase the strength depending on how they feel. If your mission is to quit, then it is recommended that the concentration of the liquid is lowered about 4mg every 3-4 weeks with the goal to ultimately reach 0mg; slowly easing the body off nicotine dependence.
Is it Safe?
Most of the components in e-liquid are well known and are used in many food and household products. Currently only pharmaceutical grade (USP) or food grade PG and VG are safe to use. E-Liquid contains nicotine and should only be used and handled by adults 18+ or 21+ or older depending on state laws. Please be aware that nicotine is a known poison and stimulant. E-liquid should never be handled by anyone underage and should only be used by people who are smokers and have a tolerance for nicotine. In small concentrations such as 36mg and below, e-liquid is safe to handle. Should any amount get on your skin, wash and clean with soap and water.
